The Nigerian Legion has initiated high-level discussions with the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to secure subsidized inputs and implements for military veterans. The announcement was made by the National Chairman, Mrs. Grace Henry, during a medical outreach held in Abuja as part of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day.

The move follows complaints from many retired personnel who have turned to farming to supplement their pensions. Veterans at the outreach, including retired Master Warrant Officers from the Army and Air Force, lamented that the skyrocketing costs of fertilizer, chemicals, and machinery are making their agricultural ventures unsustainable.

Retired officer Emmanuel Waniko highlighted that rising production costs have made it difficult for veterans to maintain their livelihoods in post-retirement. He urged the government to recognize the unique position of veterans, noting that their fixed pensions are no longer sufficient to absorb the inflationary shocks in the agricultural sector.

In response, Mrs. Grace Henry assured the veterans that the Legion is actively advocating for their inclusion in specialized agricultural intervention programs. The goal is to provide veterans with access to machinery and inputs at reduced rates, specifically targeting those who have relocated to rural areas to engage in food production.

The Legion emphasized that supporting veteran farmers is not just a matter of welfare but also a contribution to national food security. By empowering former service members to succeed in agriculture, the government can help ensure a dignified retirement for those who served the nation in uniform.
