Nigerian Driver Jailed After Fatal UK Crash Raises Concerns Over Driving Rules

A Nigerian man has been sentenced to six years in prison in the United Kingdom after causing a road accident that led to the death of a 70-year-old woman. The case has also triggered fresh concerns about gaps in the country’s driving regulations for foreign nationals.

The driver, 41-year-old Timothy Kusemi, was behind the wheel during the crash, which occurred at a junction in East Yorkshire in November 2023. At the time, he held only a provisional UK driving licence.

Investigations revealed that Kusemi had already failed his British driving test twice before the incident. Despite this, he continued to drive, taking advantage of existing rules that allow some foreign drivers to remain on the road under certain conditions.

The victim, Susan Whittles, was driving with her husband when their vehicle was struck. She died at the scene of the crash, while her husband suffered serious injuries and had to be airlifted to the hospital for urgent medical care.

During court proceedings, Kusemi admitted to causing death by dangerous driving as well as serious injury by dangerous driving. After the accident, he reportedly failed several more driving tests before eventually passing in 2025.

A coroner reviewing the case raised concerns about a loophole in UK driving laws. The current system allows some foreign drivers to continue driving even after failing tests, without the strict supervision required for local learner drivers.

The coroner warned that this difference in treatment could put other road users at risk, as individuals who have not met required driving standards may still be allowed on the roads.

In response, UK authorities have begun reviewing the rules. Officials say they will study the findings from the case to determine whether changes are needed to improve road safety and prevent similar tragedies in the future.
