Nigerian Delegation Welcomes Shettima in New York Ahead of 81st UN General Assembly
Vice President Kashim Shettima has arrived in New York to represent President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
Chairman and CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), Abike Dabiri-Erewa, joined other members of Nigeria’s delegation to receive the Vice President following his arrival in the United States.
Shettima is leading Nigeria’s high-level delegation to the global gathering, which is scheduled to hold its General Debate from September 22 to 28, 2026, under the theme, “Restoring trust, managing transformation: A United Nations that delivers for all.”
Among those who received the Vice President were Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, and Minister of Solid Minerals Development Dele Alake.
Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State is also part of the delegation accompanying Shettima.
During the UNGA week, the Vice President is expected to present Nigeria’s national statement and participate in discussions focused on development, climate action and reforms to the multilateral system.
He is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with international counterparts and engage members of the Nigerian diaspora in the United States as part of Nigeria’s diplomatic activities during the Assembly.
