The Ghanaian government has announced a broad relief and reintegration package for citizens returning from South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks against foreign nationals in some parts of the country.

Earlier this month, Ghana approved the evacuation of about 300 citizens from South Africa after President John Mahama authorised an emergency rescue operation. Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, said the affected citizens had registered with Ghana’s High Commission in Pretoria following earlier government advisories urging nationals to seek evacuation support.

In a statement issued by Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, authorities said evacuees would receive financial assistance and social support to help them settle back into life in Ghana after fleeing the violence.

Officials further disclosed that those affected would receive reintegration allowances aimed at helping them restart their lives and adapt after leaving South Africa under difficult circumstances.

The government also acknowledged the emotional and psychological effects of the attacks, announcing free psychosocial and counselling services for returnees dealing with trauma and stress linked to the crisis.

As part of longer-term recovery efforts, authorities revealed that evacuees would be enrolled in a special employment and startup support database to connect them with job openings and business opportunities.

The Ghanaian government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the welfare of its citizens abroad, stressing that the safety and wellbeing of Ghanaians remain a national priority.
