In a symbolic meeting of purpose and pride, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), paid a courtesy visit to Princess Opeyemi Bright, the Nigerian-born Mayor of Barking and Dagenham, commending her for her groundbreaking leadership and commitment to community development in the UK.

The meeting, held at the mayor’s residence in the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, highlighted the accomplishments of Princess Bright, who holds the distinction of being the youngest serving mayor in the United Kingdom.

Describing the mayor as “a shining example of excellence,” Dabiri-Erewa applauded Bright’s leadership journey and dedication to public service, calling her “a beacon of hope for young Nigerians in the diaspora.”

“Princess Bright’s rise to leadership at such a young age is a testament to the potential and resilience of Nigerians abroad, especially the youth,” said Dabiri-Erewa.“This is what we mean when we say the Nigerian diaspora is a force for good.”
The NiDCOM boss reiterated the Commission’s support for young Nigerians overseas, emphasizing that NiDCOM remains open to partnerships that promote inclusion, innovation, and sustainable development.

In her response, Mayor Princess Opeyemi Bright expressed appreciation for the visit and recognition, sharing that her passion for public service was sparked over two decades ago by her mother’s work at the grassroots level.

“I am proud to be a British-Nigerian and even more proud to serve my community while carrying my heritage with honour,” said Bright.“This visit means a lot to me. Together, we can continue to create opportunities and inspire a generation of changemakers.”

She also pledged to strengthen ties between Nigeria and the UK while advocating for greater representation and opportunity for Nigerians living in Barking and Dagenham. Her message to Nigerian youth, both at home and abroad, was clear: “Maximise your skills and talents wherever you are.”

The visit underscored a growing synergy between diaspora leaders and Nigerian institutions, as both parties seek to deepen collaboration and build bridges across borders.
