The Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has congratulated Councillor Christopher Adegoke following his emergence as the first Black and minority individual to become Chairman of the Nottinghamshire County Council since the council was established in 1889.

Adegoke was elected into the position on May 14, 2026, in what has been described as a landmark moment for diversity and representation within the United Kingdom’s public service system.

Dabiri-Erewa said the achievement reflects the growing impact of Nigerians in the diaspora across global institutions and communities. She noted that Adegoke’s rise to the top office of the council highlights the resilience, professionalism, and leadership qualities often associated with Nigerians abroad.

According to her, the councillor’s years of commitment to community development and public service have distinguished him as a worthy representative of the Nigerian diaspora.

She also praised his extensive experience in international education, public administration, and grassroots leadership, adding that his election sends a positive message about inclusion and equal representation in governance.

The NiDCOM boss further commended the leadership of the Nottinghamshire County Council for embracing diversity through Adegoke’s appointment.

Speaking after his election, Councillor Adegoke expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve the people of Nottinghamshire. He stated that he looks forward to working closely with residents, organisations, charities, and businesses across the county during his tenure.

His official inauguration as Chairman and First Citizen of Nottinghamshire County is expected to take place on June 28, 2026.

Dabiri-Erewa expressed confidence that Adegoke’s leadership would continue to inspire Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
