A Nigerian-American mathematician and educator, Akinyemi Agbede, has officially declared his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election in California, positioning himself as a candidate focused on data-driven leadership and measurable policy outcomes.

Agbede, who holds a doctorate in Mathematical Analysis from the University of Cambridge, said his academic background has equipped him with the analytical tools required to confront complex governance challenges. He argues that policymaking must be rooted in facts, not sentiment.

According to him, California requires leadership that prioritizes careful evaluation of problems and the development of practical, evidence-based solutions. He maintains that structured analysis and accountability are critical to restoring public confidence in state governance.

The academic outlined four major pillars of his campaign: education reform, economic expansion, technological advancement, and social justice. He stressed that sustained investment in these sectors would determine the state’s long-term competitiveness and stability.

On education, Agbede pledged to strengthen public schools and improve access to quality learning opportunities. He also underscored the need to create broader economic pathways, particularly for underserved communities.

He further emphasized the importance of embracing innovation, noting that California’s position as a global technology hub must be protected through forward-thinking policies that encourage research, entrepreneurship, and responsible technological growth.

Agbede also highlighted representation as a central theme of his candidacy. He said his campaign seeks to demonstrate that public office should be accessible to individuals from diverse professional and cultural backgrounds.

His entry into the race marks a significant moment for Nigerian-Americans in U.S. politics, as he becomes the first from the community to seek California’s top executive office. His campaign team has indicated plans to engage voters across demographic lines as the election cycle gains momentum.
