Nigeria Summons South African Envoy Over Rising Attacks on Citizens

Nigeria has summoned South Africa’s acting High Commissioner following a fresh wave of violent incidents targeting foreign nationals, including Nigerians, amid growing anti-immigrant tensions in parts of South Africa.

The Nigerian government said the diplomatic meeting is aimed at expressing serious concern over the safety of its citizens and the increasing number of reported attacks on individuals and business owners.

According to officials at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the developments are being closely monitored, with Nigeria warning that continued violence could affect bilateral relations between both countries.

The action follows reports of renewed anti-immigrant protests in several South African cities, where groups have allegedly targeted foreign-owned businesses and individuals in public spaces.

Authorities have linked recent unrest to broader frustrations over unemployment and crime, sentiments that have fueled hostility toward undocumented migrants and foreign traders.

Reports from affected areas indicate that at least two Nigerians and four Ethiopians have lost their lives in separate violent incidents in recent weeks, heightening regional concern.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has condemned the attacks, calling for calm and urging all residents, including foreign nationals, to respect local laws and maintain order.

Despite government intervention, tensions remain high in some communities, with increased security presence and continued calls from regional stakeholders for stronger protection of migrant populations.
