Nigeria, Over 100 Nations Without US Ambassadors Amid Global Diplomatic Gap

The United States is currently operating without confirmed ambassadors in Nigeria and more than 100 other countries, underscoring a significant shortfall in its diplomatic representation worldwide.

Recent records released by the US Department of State show that as of April 2026, ambassadorial positions remain unfilled in 117 countries. The figures, compiled by the Office of Presidential Appointments, reflect delays in nominations and Senate confirmations across multiple regions.

The gap cuts across continents, affecting countries in Africa, Europe, Asia, the Americas, and Oceania. In Africa, several nations—including Kenya, Ghana, and Senegal—are among those without officially appointed US envoys.

In Nigeria, diplomatic responsibilities are currently being handled by a chargé d’affaires, a temporary representative in the absence of a Senate-confirmed ambassador. This is a standard interim arrangement but often limits the level of diplomatic engagement.

Key global partners in Europe and Asia, such as Germany, Ukraine, Saudi Arabia, and Indonesia, are also affected, raising broader concerns about the scale and impact of the vacancies.

The development follows earlier diplomatic restructuring efforts under former President Donald Trump, which included the recall of numerous senior diplomats as part of a shift in foreign policy direction.

Although embassies continue to function through interim leadership, analysts warn that prolonged vacancies could weaken diplomatic influence, slow bilateral relations, and reduce the effectiveness of US engagement in critical regions like Africa.
