Nigeria has provided formal protection to Fernando Dias da Costa, a leading opposition presidential candidate in Guinea-Bissau, by placing him under security at the Nigerian Embassy in the country. President Bola Ahmed Tinubu approved the measure following concerns over credible threats to the candidate’s safety during a volatile post-election period.

The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through a letter from Minister Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, requested that the ECOWAS Stabilization Support Mission in Guinea-Bissau extend security coverage to Dias da Costa while he remains on embassy grounds. The measure is described as a proactive step to safeguard his life and democratic participation.

The decision follows a recent military takeover in Guinea-Bissau, which disrupted the country’s electoral process. The coup occurred just days after the presidential election, intensifying tensions and raising concerns about the safety of political actors.

Observers had previously described the elections as generally peaceful, noting that the results were contested by various political parties. The military intervention has prompted condemnation from regional and international organizations concerned about the democratic process in Guinea-Bissau.

Nigeria’s protective action underscores its commitment to supporting democracy and stability in West Africa. Officials emphasize that safeguarding political figures is part of broader efforts to maintain peace and uphold citizens’ democratic rights.

The request to ECOWAS for additional protection highlights Nigeria’s reliance on regional collaboration to manage crises and ensure the security of political participants in high-risk environments.

This intervention reflects Nigeria’s longstanding leadership role within ECOWAS, which has often mediated conflicts and facilitated peacekeeping efforts in the region. The move positions Nigeria as a key player in mitigating post-election instability in Guinea-Bissau.

As Guinea-Bissau navigates the aftermath of the military takeover, Dias da Costa’s protection under Nigerian care may play a critical role in sustaining opposition activity and preserving avenues for democratic resolution in the country.
