The Nigerian government has issued a stern warning to its citizens about the increasing trend of Nigerians being recruited to participate in foreign military conflicts. Authorities described the practice as highly dangerous and illegal, stressing that it violates both national and international laws.
According to officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, investigations have revealed that some Nigerians are lured abroad with promises of lucrative employment, security roles, study opportunities, or fast-tracked migration benefits. In many cases, these offers mask the reality of active combat deployment.
“The recruitment process often includes enticing financial incentives, including high salaries, signing bonuses, and citizenship promises,” the Ministry stated. Reports indicate that some victims are misled into signing contracts in foreign languages without adequate legal guidance, while their travel documents may be withheld upon arrival in conflict zones.
Authorities also highlighted the role of intermediaries who facilitate overseas travel under tourist or non-military visas, exposing citizens to serious physical and legal risks. The Ministry emphasized that participating in such foreign military engagements outside government-approved channels is illegal and can carry severe consequences.
In response, the Nigerian government said it is coordinating with domestic and international partners to investigate cases of illegal recruitment and raise public awareness about the dangers involved. Nigerian diplomatic missions have been instructed to increase vigilance and provide timely advisories to citizens abroad.
Parents, educators, and community leaders have been urged to educate young Nigerians on the risks associated with deceptive recruitment schemes and to verify overseas employment or study opportunities through official channels. Citizens are encouraged to report suspicious recruitment activities to authorities immediately.
The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigerians both at home and abroad, underscoring that no citizen should be exploited or trafficked into foreign military operations under any circumstances.
This warning comes amid global concerns over the exploitation of foreign nationals in armed conflicts, with governments emphasizing the need for legal pathways for overseas employment and migration.
