The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has responded to a viral social media video showing a group of Ghanaians protesting and calling for Nigerians to be expelled from Ghana, accusing them of unruly behaviour.
In a statement issued on Monday, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of NIDCOM, condemned the generalisation of Nigerians as criminals, describing the narrative as “unfair and dangerous.” She emphasized that while every community may have a few bad elements, most Nigerians living abroad are law-abiding and contribute positively to their host countries.

“Ghana and Nigeria are like Siamese twins.
In the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration, we must continue to live together in peace,” Dabiri-Erewa stated. She appealed to Nigerians in Ghana to remain calm and avoid any form of provocation or violence, noting that the matter is being handled through diplomatic channels.
According to her, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Ojukwu, is engaging with Ghanaian authorities to de-escalate tensions and ensure the safety of Nigerians living in the country.
She also dismissed circulating reports alleging attacks on Nigerian-owned shops and properties in Ghana, stating there is currently no verified evidence of such incidents. “We must avoid reprisal actions and be cautious not to inflame the situation with misinformation,” she said.
Dabiri-Erewa commended the Nigerian and Ghanaian High Commissions for their swift response and ongoing efforts to maintain peace. She also urged individuals on both sides to refrain from inciting comments that could worsen the situation.
