A high-level engagement between Nigerian officials and diaspora members took place in Leeds as part of activities leading up to the upcoming presidential state visit to the United Kingdom.

The event, hosted at the Civic Hall on March 15, was led by the Lord Mayor of Leeds, Abigail Marshall Katung, who welcomed Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission.

The town hall brought together members of the Nigerian Community Leeds (NCL), creating a platform for direct interaction between government representatives and Nigerians living in the UK.

Discussions at the session centred on the strategic role of NiDCOM in supporting Nigerians abroad, including access to opportunities, government-backed initiatives, and frameworks designed to improve diaspora participation in national development.

Dabiri-Erewa highlighted ongoing efforts by the commission to strengthen engagement with Nigerians overseas, while also addressing concerns raised by attendees during an interactive question-and-answer session.

Participants were also briefed on existing support mechanisms available to diaspora Nigerians, particularly in areas of investment, welfare, and policy inclusion.

The meeting was described by organisers as a successful and impactful engagement, reinforcing the importance of sustained dialogue between the Nigerian government and its diaspora community.

The event forms part of broader diplomatic and community outreach activities ahead of the Nigerian President’s official state visit to the UK, aimed at deepening bilateral relations and strengthening ties with Nigerians living abroad.
