The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has called on authorities in the United Kingdom to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the killing of a Nigerian university student in Leicester, describing the incident as deeply troubling and unacceptable.
The victim, Khaleed Oladipo, was a 20-year-old second-year Cybersecurity student at De Montfort University. He was reportedly attacked and stabbed while making his way home after watching a football match in the city.
Reacting to the incident, NiDCOM Chairperson, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, urged British law enforcement agencies to act swiftly and transparently to identify and prosecute those responsible for the crime. She stressed that justice must be served to bring closure to the bereaved family and deter similar attacks.
In a statement issued by the Commission, the killing was described as a devastating loss, not only to Oladipo’s family but also to the wider Nigerian community at home and abroad. NiDCOM noted that the young student was pursuing a promising career in a critical and highly competitive field.
The Commission expressed concern over the recurring cases of violent attacks involving Nigerian students in parts of the UK, pointing to rising knife-related crimes in several British cities as a growing public safety issue.
NiDCOM assured that it is working closely with the Nigerian High Commission in the UK and remains in contact with Oladipo’s family to follow developments surrounding the investigation.
The Commission also appealed to Nigerians living in Leicester to remain calm, cooperate with local authorities, and avoid actions that could escalate tensions while investigations are ongoing.
Reaffirming its mandate, NiDCOM said it would continue to advocate for the protection and welfare of Nigerians abroad, emphasizing that the safety of citizens in the diaspora remains a priority.
