NiDCOM Confirms Release of Nigerian Girls Detained in Mauritius

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has confirmed the release of the Nigerian girls who were detained in Mauritius, bringing relief to their families and many Nigerians who had followed the incident with concern. The Commission said the affected women are now safe and are on their way back to Nigeria.
The confirmation was contained in a statement issued by NiDCOM's Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun. He disclosed that the Commission, under the leadership of its Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, had remained actively engaged with the relevant Nigerian Embassy to secure the girls' release.
According to the statement, the Nigerian Embassy formally took up the matter with the appropriate authorities, ensuring that diplomatic channels were fully utilised. The intervention, NiDCOM said, was aimed not only at securing the girls' freedom but also at ensuring accountability and preventing similar incidents in the future.
The Commission revealed that the girls were safely released in Nairobi and are currently en route to Nigeria. Although further details surrounding the circumstances of their detention were not disclosed, NiDCOM expressed satisfaction that the immediate priority of securing their safety had been achieved.
Dabiri-Erewa expressed empathy for the affected women and said the Commission hopes they will be willing to share their experiences after returning home. She explained that their accounts could help shape follow-up actions, strengthen support measures, and provide useful information for future interventions involving Nigerians abroad.
She reaffirmed that the welfare, safety and protection of Nigerians across the world remain central to the Commission's mandate. According to her, NiDCOM will continue working closely with Nigerian diplomatic missions and relevant authorities whenever citizens abroad require assistance.
The NiDCOM Chairman also noted that protecting Nigerians in the diaspora aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to promote the well-being of Nigerians both at home and overseas. She stressed that every Nigerian deserves protection regardless of where they reside.
The Commission assured the public that it will continue to monitor the situation and collaborate with all relevant stakeholders to safeguard the rights of Nigerians overseas. It also reiterated its commitment to responding swiftly to cases affecting citizens in the diaspora while strengthening measures to prevent future occurrences.
