NDC Withdraws Recognition of Diaspora Chapters Over Court Ruling

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has withdrawn official recognition of its chapters outside Nigeria following a court ruling that bars Nigerian political parties from establishing or supervising branches in foreign countries.

The party announced the decision on Sunday through its National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, who said the move was in compliance with a judgment delivered by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Maitama.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Peter Kekemeke in the case of Prof. Ali Alao v. All Progressives Congress and Anor, held that political parties registered in Nigeria lacked the legal authority to establish, operate or supervise chapters beyond the country's territorial boundaries.

According to the NDC, the court also declared diaspora chapters of Nigerian political parties unconstitutional and unrecognised under Nigerian law.

Despite withdrawing formal recognition, the party expressed appreciation to Nigerians living abroad for their contributions, loyalty and support, particularly those backing its candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Director said the party remained committed to transparency, accountability and due process, adding that it would seek further legal guidance on the matter.

He also disclosed that the NDC had begun efforts to harmonise groups operating in countries where multiple chapters existed, although the latest decision suspends their formal recognition.

The party urged its supporters in the diaspora to continue engaging with one another and assured them that communication would be maintained through appropriate legal channels.

It also encouraged its overseas supporters to remain committed to its political objectives despite the development
