Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin in New Delhi on Friday, highlighting a renewed focus on defence, energy, and trade cooperation. The visit comes as India faces international scrutiny over its continued engagement with Russia.

Putin received a formal ceremonial welcome, complete with an honour guard and 21-gun salute, before the leaders held talks at Hyderabad House. Modi personally greeted Putin at the airport, underscoring the close ties between the two nations.

Defence and technology were key points of discussion. The leaders explored co-production of military hardware, including fighter jets, air defence systems, and nuclear submarines, as well as collaboration in space exploration and advanced technology sectors.

Energy cooperation also featured prominently. Russia pledged continued oil and gas supplies, offering India a stable source amid global disruptions and reinforcing Moscow’s role as a strategic energy partner for New Delhi.

Bilateral trade discussions focused on expansion and balance. While total trade reached $68.7 billion in 2024–25, Indian exports accounted for just $4.88 billion. Both sides agreed to initiatives aimed at improving market access and supporting Indian businesses.

Geopolitical issues, particularly the ongoing Ukraine conflict, were addressed. Putin briefed Modi on Russia’s efforts toward a peaceful resolution, while Modi reiterated India’s stance as “on the side of peace,” highlighting New Delhi’s independent foreign policy.

The summit also featured meetings with business and industry leaders, followed by a state banquet hosted by Indian President Droupadi Murmu. Analysts say the engagement demonstrates India’s strategy of balancing global pressures while deepening strategic and economic partnerships.

This marks Putin’s first visit to India since the escalation of the Ukraine war, signaling the enduring significance of India-Russia relations. The talks underscore both countries’ commitment to long-term cooperation in defence, trade, and energy, despite growing global geopolitical challenges.
