The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, has expressed deep concern over what he described as distressingly low voter turnout during the Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections. He noted that participation levels fell significantly short of expectations despite extensive logistical preparation.

According to the INEC chairman, electoral materials were deployed on time and security arrangements were adequate across polling units. However, the limited presence of voters raised questions about civic engagement and public trust in grassroots governance structures within the FCT.
Observers who monitored the elections reported sparse queues in several wards across Abuja, with many polling units witnessing minimal activity throughout the day. Political analysts attribute the apathy to voter fatigue, economic hardship, and a perception that local council elections carry limited impact on citizens’ daily lives.
Professor Yakubu reiterated the commission’s commitment to strengthening voter education campaigns and deepening stakeholder collaboration to rebuild public confidence in local elections. He emphasized that area council administrations play critical roles in primary healthcare, sanitation, and community development.

The development has reignited broader conversations about democratic participation in Nigeria, particularly at sub-national levels. Civil society groups have called for intensified awareness drives to encourage citizens to view grassroots elections as fundamental pillars of democratic consolidation.
