Frustration is mounting in the House of Representatives over the delayed investigation into the alleged misuse of $25 million in FIFA and CAF grants by the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF). Despite a resolution passed over two months ago to probe the funds, the House Committee on Sports has yet to submit its findings or recommendations to the plenary for further action.

The investigation was triggered by a motion of urgent public importance co-sponsored by lawmakers Adedayo Adesola and Felix Nwaeke. They argued that the NFF received development funds in excess of $25 million between 2015 and 2025 with no proportional investment in the growth of national teams or local football infrastructure to justify such expenditure.
Hon. Adesola, representing Apapa Federal Constituency, specifically linked the alleged mismanagement to the poor performance of Nigeria’s national teams in recent international outings. The motion aims to stop further misuse of these global grants, which are intended strictly for the development of grassroots and elite football within the country.
The probe also finds support in past allegations made by former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh, who accused the NFF of stifling growth through misappropriation. Oliseh previously cited the questionable handling of $1 million received from FIFA for the 2002 World Cup as a historical example of long-standing financial irregularities within the body.

Although the House initially considered an ad hoc committee, it ultimately committed the task to the Standing Committee on Sports on October 28, 2025. Stakeholders are now calling for transparency and speed, insisting that the delay in the probe is hindering the necessary reforms required to revitalize Nigeria’s most popular sport.
