The Lagos State Government has congratulated the family of the late Afrobeat icon, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, following his posthumous recognition with the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award. The honour marks a historic milestone, making Fela the first African artist to receive the prestigious award.

The award was presented on January 31, 2026, at the Grammy Special Merit Awards ceremony held in Los Angeles, United States. It was received on behalf of the late musician by his children, Yeni, Femi, Kunle, and Shalewa Kuti, representing the Kuti family.
Reacting to the achievement, the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, described the recognition as a proud moment for Lagos State, Nigeria, and the African continent. She noted that the award reinforces Lagos’ status as Africa’s cultural heartbeat and a hub for globally influential creative talents.
According to the Commissioner, the Ministry remains committed to preserving Fela’s legacy while promoting Lagos State’s rich cultural heritage through sustained investment in the arts, creative industries, and cultural diplomacy. She emphasised that Fela’s influence transcends music, representing courage, social consciousness, and African identity.

The Kuti family, in their reaction, described the award as a symbolic bridge between generations and a testament to the growing global recognition of African music. Nearly three decades after his passing, Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s legacy continues to inspire artistic expression, activism, and global dialogue.
