Kwara State Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq has denounced the deadly assault on Eruku community, directing security agencies to launch an immediate reinforcement to counter the rising wave of attacks in the area. He described the incident as a disturbing escalation that demands urgent and coordinated action.
The attack, carried out during a worship session at the Christ Apostolic Church, resulted in multiple fatalities and several abductions. The violence has sent shockwaves through the community, deepening fears among residents already grappling with repeated security breaches.
In his reaction, the Governor assured citizens that the state government is working closely with security formations to tighten surveillance and prevent further incursions. He emphasised that criminal elements would not be given space to destabilise border communities.
AbdulRazaq also commended President Bola Tinubu for approving the deployment of 900 additional troops to the state, noting that their presence has already contributed to improved calm in previously troubled areas. He expressed confidence that the reinforcement would enhance deterrence and boost overall security.
Despite government assurances, tension escalated on Wednesday as angry youths in Eruku blocked the Kwara–Kogi highway to protest the recurring attacks. They erected barricades and halted vehicular movement, insisting that authorities must respond decisively to their security concerns.
The protesters said the blockade was a last resort to draw attention to their worsening plight. They lamented that Eruku and neighbouring towns have become soft targets for gunmen who operate with increasing boldness.
Residents who spoke during the protest demanded consistent military patrols, improved intelligence gathering, and stronger collaboration between state and federal authorities. They stressed that only a sustained security presence can guarantee safety in the vulnerable corridor.
Many community members vowed not to lift the blockade until they see concrete action from government. They warned that continued inaction would expose more lives to danger, calling for urgent steps to end the cycle of violence in Eruku and surrounding communities.
