The Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, Michael Freeman, has accused Iran of supporting Shi’ite groups in Nigeria and spreading activities that could undermine security in the country and across West Africa.
Freeman made the claim during an appearance on The Morning Show on Arise Television, where he alleged that Tehran has a long history of sponsoring militant organisations in different parts of the world.
According to the envoy, Iran has provided support to groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah in the Middle East and is also extending similar influence into parts of Africa. He alleged that such actions are part of broader efforts to destabilise regions outside Iran’s borders.
Speaking about Nigeria specifically, Freeman claimed that the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) receives backing from the Iranian government. He said evidence of this support has been publicly documented, including statements made by Iran’s leadership.
Freeman argued that Iran has spent decades funding and encouraging militant organisations globally, accusing the country of using these alliances to advance its geopolitical interests.
He further stated that Iran’s hostility toward Israel has driven many of its international actions, including its support for armed groups in various regions.
The ambassador also warned that Iran’s activities, if unchecked, could contribute to instability not only in Nigeria but throughout West Africa. He stressed that Israel remains strongly opposed to any development that could strengthen Iran’s influence or allow the country to expand its military capabilities.
Iran has previously rejected similar accusations from Western governments and their allies, often insisting that its foreign policy supports resistance movements rather than terrorism.
