Nigeria’s electoral management body, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has commenced a comprehensive review of the operational guidelines governing political parties ahead of the 2027 general elections. The move is aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s democratic processes and ensuring that political parties operate in accordance with the Electoral Act and existing constitutional provisions.

According to officials of the commission, the review will assess several regulatory areas including party registration requirements, compliance with internal democratic processes, and the monitoring of party finances. INEC believes that revisiting these guidelines is necessary to address gaps observed during previous elections and to improve transparency within Nigeria’s multi-party system.

The review is also expected to examine issues surrounding candidate nomination procedures, party primaries, and the conduct of political parties during election campaigns. Observers have long argued that weaknesses in internal party processes have contributed to electoral disputes, litigation, and political instability.

INEC officials noted that the commission will engage political parties, civil society organizations, and electoral stakeholders during the review process. The consultations are expected to produce recommendations that will help strengthen institutional accountability and improve compliance with electoral regulations.

As preparations gradually begin for the 2027 general elections, analysts say the initiative represents an early step by INEC to reinforce electoral credibility. The commission has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that Nigeria’s political parties operate within a framework that promotes fairness, transparency, and democratic integrity.
