The Indian diaspora has emerged as the largest in the world, with 35.4 million people of Indian descent spread across various countries, according to Minister of State for External Affairs, Pabitra Margherita.

This vast community is composed of 15.9 million Non-Resident Indians (NRIs), who retain Indian citizenship while working or conducting business overseas, and 19.5 million Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), who have adopted foreign citizenship but maintain cultural and ancestral ties to India.

Addressing India’s Parliament, Margherita emphasized the crucial role of the diaspora in driving economic and cultural ties between India and the global community.
“The Indian diaspora is an invaluable asset, fostering international connections and boosting India’s presence on the global stage. Their achievements enhance India’s reputation and contribute to the nation’s economic growth,” Margherita stated.

He noted that overseas Indians contribute significantly through remittances, trade, investment, and knowledge exchange, strengthening India’s influence worldwide

The Indian government has increasingly focused on engaging with its diaspora, recognizing their contributions and leveraging their expertise in various sectors. Officials believe that maintaining strong ties with this global network can enhance India’s soft power and expand opportunities in diplomacy, commerce, and innovation.

As one of the most dynamic expatriate communities, the Indian diaspora continues to serve as a bridge between their adopted countries and their homeland, reinforcing cultural bonds while playing a key role in shaping global perceptions of India.
