A 57-year-old homeless Nigerian national has been sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment following an incident involving harassment, exposure and the possession of an offensive weapon in a Surrey village.

The defendant, Olubenga Akinpelu, was found to have followed a female care home worker on her way to work in the early hours of the morning. The court heard that he pursued her through an alleyway while holding a broken glass bottle, causing the woman to fear for her safety.

During the encounter, the victim managed to escape after misleading the defendant into believing police officers were nearby. As she ran past him, he threw the bottle in her direction, smashing it on the ground, before continuing to follow her into the care home premises.

A second woman arriving at the care home witnessed the defendant with his trousers undone and his genitals exposed near the entrance. Although he briefly attempted to cover himself, he continued shouting until police officers arrived at the scene.

Police told the court that Akinpelu made sexually explicit remarks and gestures during his arrest and appeared to be intoxicated. In a subsequent interview, he initially denied responsibility for the offences.

At Guildford Crown Court, Akinpelu admitted to charges including exposure, affray and possession of an offensive weapon. In addition to the custodial sentence, the court ordered him to register as a sex offender for seven years and imposed a sexual harm prevention order for the same duration.

The court was informed that the defendant has lived in the United Kingdom for approximately 20 years and had been homeless for several years prior to the incident.
