Gombe Intensifies Campaign for Voluntary Blood Donation

The Gombe State Ministry of Health has expanded its voluntary blood donation campaign to address critical shortages in emergency healthcare services. The initiative was formally launched at the General Hospital Gombe by Deputy Governor Dr. Manassah Jatau.

Dr. Jatau described voluntary blood donation as a humanitarian duty capable of saving lives, particularly in maternal health emergencies and road traffic accident cases. He emphasized that the government is appealing to residents rather than compelling participation.

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Habu Dahiru, disclosed that the state aims to collect 1,000 pints of blood for distribution across hospitals, including the Federal Teaching Hospital Gombe and facilities in all 11 local government areas.

Authorities warned against the commercialisation of donated blood, stressing that strict monitoring mechanisms will ensure proper utilisation. Plans are underway to institutionalise a transparent blood management framework.

Public health advocates say sustained voluntary donation campaigns could significantly reduce preventable deaths and strengthen emergency preparedness in the state.
