The Government of Ghana has announced a plan to sponsor match tickets for members of the Ghanaian diaspora as part of preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Officials disclosed that about 1,000 tickets will be funded for Ghanaian supporters living abroad, particularly in countries hosting World Cup matches, including the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
The initiative is aimed at ensuring strong fan presence for the Black Stars during the tournament while reducing the financial strain associated with sponsoring full travel packages for supporters.
Government sources explained that earlier considerations to fund travel for large groups of fans were abandoned after cost assessments revealed that individual travel support could amount to as much as $11,000 per person.
Authorities said the ticket-focused strategy offers a more realistic and cost-effective way to maintain strong national support in stadiums without overextending public funds.
The Ministry of Sports stated that the distribution process for the tickets will be transparent and structured, with priority expected to be given to organized Ghanaian diaspora groups and verified supporter associations.
Officials added that consultations are ongoing with Ghanaian community leaders abroad to establish clear guidelines for eligibility and allocation across different host cities.
The government emphasized that the initiative forms part of broader efforts to prepare the Black Stars for a competitive showing at the 2026 World Cup while strengthening engagement with citizens in the diaspora.
