Ghana Debunks False Cambodia Deportation Claims Affecting African Nationals

The Ghanaian government has dismissed reports circulating online that Cambodian authorities had ordered citizens of several African countries, including Ghana, to leave the country by the end of May or face legal consequences.

In a statement released on Friday, Ghana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified that the alleged immigration directive being shared across social media platforms did not originate from any official Cambodian institution. The ministry said it immediately sought clarification from Cambodian authorities after the notice gained widespread attention.

According to the ministry, officials in Cambodia confirmed that the document was fraudulent and had no connection to the country's immigration authorities. Cambodian officials also publicly rejected the claims, describing the purported deportation notice as entirely false.

The rumours had suggested that citizens from Ghana, Kenya, Cameroon, Uganda, and other African nations living in Cambodia were being instructed to leave the country or risk arrest, imprisonment, and fines for immigration-related violations.

Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry urged the public and media organisations to exercise caution and verify information before sharing it, warning that the spread of false reports could create unnecessary panic among Africans residing in Cambodia and their families back home.

While refuting the deportation claims, the ministry disclosed that some Ghanaian nationals in Cambodia had voluntarily requested assistance to return home.

Through diplomatic arrangements coordinated by Ghana’s High Commission in Malaysia, authorities have already facilitated the return of 85 Ghanaians between March and May this year.

The government also revealed that plans are underway to assist an additional 76 Ghanaian citizens who have expressed a desire to leave Cambodia and return home.

Ghanaian authorities said they will continue collaborating with Cambodian officials to safeguard the welfare of their citizens and ensure smooth repatriation efforts for those seeking to return.

The ministry further encouraged citizens to rely on information issued through official government channels regarding matters affecting Ghanaians abroad.
