Officials in Accra confirmed that the evacuation is part of a coordinated diplomatic and humanitarian response aimed at safeguarding Ghanaian nationals caught in escalating tensions abroad. The exercise is being handled by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with relevant South African authorities and international partners.
The Government of the Republic of Ghana has commenced emergency evacuation arrangements for its citizens residing in South Africa, with the first batch of 300 nationals scheduled to return home on May 21, 2026. The move follows growing concerns over safety conditions affecting foreign residents in parts of the country.
President John Mahama approved the immediate evacuation after receiving security updates on the situation affecting Ghanaian communities in South Africa. Government sources stressed that the welfare of citizens abroad remains a top priority of the administration.
Diplomatic sources linked the evacuation to rising incidents of insecurity and reports of hostility targeting foreign nationals and businesses in some regions of South Africa. However, officials have not publicly detailed specific triggering events behind the decision.
The Ghanaian government noted that contingency plans are already in place for additional evacuation flights if conditions do not improve. Authorities say they will continue to monitor developments closely and respond as required to ensure citizens’ safety.
Meanwhile, arrangements are ongoing to support reintegration of returnees, including coordination with relevant agencies for temporary accommodation and assistance. Officials emphasized that further updates will be provided as the situation evolves.
