The Federal Road Safety Corps has directed all construction companies operating on roads across the country to immediately install adequate and compliant road signs at every construction zone. The directive follows renewed concerns over motorists’ safety in areas undergoing road rehabilitation.

According to the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, the order aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s ongoing nationwide road overhaul, which involves extensive construction and reconstruction projects. He said the move is aimed at ensuring safe navigation for road users around work sites.

In a statement issued on Monday by the FRSC Spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, the corps explained that proper signage at construction sites is mandatory and must be maintained throughout the project’s duration. Mohammed has also instructed all FRSC Commanding Officers to commence strict enforcement immediately.

The corps condemned repeated failures by some construction companies to provide adequate warning, information, and diversion signs, noting that such negligence places motorists and other road users at serious risk. It stressed that any contractor found violating approved safety standards would face regulatory sanctions.

The directive comes amid longstanding concerns over the absence of uniform road signs at construction points nationwide. The corps noted that issues such as defective diversions, poor lighting, illegal U-turns, and failed sections of roads continue to endanger unsuspecting motorists.

“This directive is to ensure the safety of the motoring public around construction sites,” the Corps Marshal said, adding that companies must install, maintain, and continuously update proper signage at all active and inactive sites.
“Field commands will intensify supervision, and contractors who breach safety standards will face decisive regulatory actions,” he added, reaffirming the corps’ commitment to reducing crashes in construction zones.

The FRSC however emphasised that despite previous attempts to standardise road signage including the introduction of a Standard Road Signage Code and establishing a signage production facility in Abuja compliance by some construction firms remains inadequate. It warned that the agency will sustain a nationwide clampdown on erring contractors to ensure safer travel for Nigerians.
