The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that excessive speed and wrongful overtaking were the primary causes of the fatal road crash involving British-Nigerian boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Monday, an incident that claimed the lives of two foreign nationals and left others injured. The accident, which occurred around midday near the Sinoma area close to Sagamu in Ogun State, has again drawn attention to persistent traffic violations on one of Nigeria’s busiest highways, especially during periods of increased vehicular movement.

The confirmation was given by the Corps Public Education Officer, Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, in a statement issued on Monday, following preliminary investigations by the FRSC Ogun Sector Command into the circumstances surrounding the crash involving a black Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and a stationary red Sinotruck.

According to the FRSC, five adult male occupants were involved in the crash, with two victims confirmed dead at the scene, one sustaining injuries, and two others escaping unhurt. The statement noted that Anthony Joshua was rescued alive and suffered only minor injuries as a result of the incident.

The corps explained that emergency responders promptly evacuated the injured victim to a medical facility for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at the Livewell Morgue in Ajaka, Sagamu, adding that the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was duly notified to commence further investigation and documentation.

FRSC stressed that its preliminary findings showed that the Lexus SUV was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit before losing control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashing into the stationary truck parked by the roadside.

“Preliminary findings indicate that the Lexus Jeep, which was suspected to be travelling beyond the legally prescribed speed limit on the corridor, lost control during an overtaking manoeuvre and crashed into a stationary truck well packed by the side of the road,” the statement said.
“The primary causes of the crash being excessive speed and wrongful overtaking constitute serious traffic violations and remain among the leading causes of fatal road crashes on Nigerian highways,” the FRSC added.

The corps conveyed the condolences of the Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, to the families of the deceased and wished Anthony Joshua a speedy recovery, while urging motorists to prioritise safety by avoiding speeding and dangerous overtaking, particularly during the festive season, and reaffirming its commitment to safer highways through enforcement, rescue operations and sustained public education.
