A court in London has sentenced former imam Abdul Halim Khan to life imprisonment after he was found guilty of sexually abusing several women and young girls over a period of more than 10 years.
The 54-year-old was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court and ordered to serve a minimum of 20 years in prison before he can apply for parole.
Khan was convicted of 21 offences, including multiple counts of rape, child rape, sexual assault, and assault by penetration. Prosecutors told the court that he exploited his role as a religious leader in east London to gain the trust of victims before abusing them.
According to investigators, the former cleric arranged meetings with victims in private locations and used fear, manipulation, and claims of supernatural powers to silence them. Victims were allegedly threatened with spiritual harm and warned that speaking out could endanger their families.
Police launched an investigation in 2018 after one victim disclosed the abuse to a teacher. Detectives later interviewed more than 50 witnesses and examined several mobile devices during the inquiry.
One survivor said coming forward was emotionally painful but described the verdict as a significant step toward justice after years of trauma.
Lead investigator Jennie Ronan said Khan abused the trust attached to his position to target vulnerable individuals. Prosecutor Melissa Garner added that experts were consulted during the trial to explain how religious beliefs had been manipulated to control victims and prevent them from reporting the abuse.
Authorities said the conviction sends a strong message that offenders who exploit positions of influence to commit crimes against women and children will be prosecuted and held accountable.
