FG Urges States to Ban Wooden Boats on Waterways

The Federal Government has urged state governments to ban the use of wooden boats for commercial transportation on waterways to reduce accidents and loss of lives.

The Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, made the call following recent boat accidents that claimed several lives across the country.

He advised states to invest in safer alternatives such as fibre and aluminium boats, which are more stable and durable.

The minister also warned passengers against boarding overloaded or poorly maintained boats and stressed the importance of wearing life jackets.

According to him, safety must be prioritised on Nigeria’s waterways to prevent avoidable tragedies.
