The Federal Government has begun a nationwide consultation to gather public opinion on potential regulations aimed at protecting children online, including the possibility of introducing age limits for social media platforms.
The initiative was announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, who said the government is seeking feedback from Nigerians before adopting any formal policy framework.
According to the minister, the internet offers enormous opportunities for young people in areas such as learning, creativity, and communication, but it also presents serious risks that must be carefully addressed.
He noted that children can be exposed to cyberbullying, harmful or inappropriate content, online exploitation, misuse of personal information, and emerging threats linked to artificial intelligence technologies.
Tijani explained that the consultation will also examine possible policy options such as stronger age verification systems, improved platform accountability, and enhanced regulatory oversight for digital platforms operating in the country.
The minister urged parents, educators, technology professionals, and young people to participate in the consultation process so that government decisions will reflect national priorities and protect children’s rights.
The move mirrors growing global discussions on regulating children’s access to social media, as several countries consider stricter rules to make online spaces safer for minors.
