An explosion was reported near Dubai International Airport on Saturday, sending a plume of smoke into the sky and prompting concerns among travellers and residents in the area.
Witnesses said a loud blast was heard around the airport, which is one of the busiest international aviation hubs in the world. Shortly after the incident, flight tracking data indicated that several aircraft were circling in the air, suggesting that incoming flights were temporarily held while the situation was assessed.
Authorities in Dubai later stated that the incident was minor and resulted from falling debris after an aerial interception. Officials also dismissed widespread reports circulating online that suggested a more serious situation at the airport.
Operations at the airport had already been affected earlier in the week as tensions in the Gulf region intensified. Limited flight movements had resumed following earlier security concerns linked to ongoing regional hostilities.
Last week, an earlier incident at the airport left four staff members injured and caused damage to a passenger concourse. Airport authorities said the situation was swiftly contained and that emergency teams responded immediately.
In recent days, security incidents linked to regional attacks have been reported in several locations across the United Arab Emirates, including Abu Dhabi International Airport, the luxury resort area of Palm Jumeirah, and the iconic Burj Al Arab hotel.
Despite the latest scare, authorities say airport operations remain under control while security agencies continue to monitor the situation closely.
