A prominent diaspora advocate, Collins Nweke, has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into the killing of Emeka Uzor in Johannesburg, describing the incident as deeply troubling and demanding accountability from authorities.
Uzor, who was reportedly shot while inside his vehicle on February 8, has sparked outrage among Nigerians at home and abroad. The incident has reignited concerns over the safety of Nigerians living in South Africa, particularly amid longstanding tensions and past xenophobic attacks.
Nweke urged the South African Police Service and the Independent Police Investigative Directorate to carry out a swift, impartial, and public investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting. He stressed that justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done.
According to him, recurring violent incidents involving Nigerians point to deeper systemic failures that cannot be ignored. He argued that previous diplomatic discussions between Nigeria and South Africa, including proposed early warning mechanisms to prevent attacks, must move beyond paper commitments to practical enforcement.
Nweke also called on the Nigerian government to strengthen its diplomatic presence in South Africa, noting that proactive engagement is necessary to safeguard citizens abroad rather than reacting after tragedies occur.
While condemning the killing, he appealed to Nigerians residing in South Africa to remain calm and law-abiding, emphasizing that unity and lawful conduct remain the strongest tools in seeking justice.
.
He further warned against narratives that stereotype Nigerians or diminish the value of their lives, insisting that continental integration cannot thrive where migrant communities feel unsafe or targeted.
Extending condolences to Uzor’s family and his community in Enugu State, Nweke reaffirmed that diaspora leaders would continue to push for accountability until clarity and justice are achieved.
