A coalition of Nigerians living abroad has appealed to the Mexican government to reject the appointment of Reno Omokri as Nigeria’s ambassador to Mexico. The group expressed concerns over the nomination and urged authorities in Mexico to reconsider accepting his diplomatic posting.
The organisation, known as the Global Coalition for Security and Democracy in Nigeria (GCSDN), made the request in a letter addressed to Mexico’s President, Claudia Sheinbaum. The letter was signed by the coalition’s global coordinator, Frederick Odorige.
According to the group, Omokri’s nomination has generated controversy among some Nigerians both at home and abroad. It argued that the appointment raises questions about transparency and due process in the selection of diplomatic representatives.
The coalition alleged that the ambassadorial nominee was not subjected to the full legislative screening typically carried out by Nigeria’s National Assembly. It claimed the process was handled in a manner that limited broader scrutiny.
The group also suggested that the nomination may have been influenced by political considerations. It argued that such factors should not override the importance of merit and credibility in diplomatic appointments.
GCSDN further stated that the development has sparked debates within sections of the Nigerian diaspora, with some expressing reservations about the decision. The coalition said these concerns formed the basis of its appeal to Mexican authorities.
The group ultimately urged the Mexican government to review the situation carefully before accepting the appointment, insisting that diplomatic postings should reflect transparency, accountability, and Nigeria’s national interest.
