A diaspora-based socio-cultural organisation, the Ora-Ekpen Association, has begun a comprehensive restoration and rehabilitation of the Sabongida-Ora General Hospital in Owan West Local Government Area of Edo State, marking a significant intervention in the area’s public healthcare system.
The association announced that the project is aimed at reviving the long-neglected facility and upgrading it to meet the minimum standards expected of a modern general hospital. The initiative forms part of a broader commitment to improving healthcare access for residents of Sabongida-Ora and neighbouring communities.
As part of the first phase of the intervention, the group has committed an initial sum of ₦10 million to address urgent needs within the hospital. The funds are expected to support the immediate purchase of essential equipment, including solar power installations and high-capacity fans for patient wards, to improve power supply and overall patient comfort.
The association noted that years of inadequate funding and limited maintenance had left the hospital in poor condition, affecting service delivery and staff efficiency. It stressed that the current effort goes beyond short-term repairs and is focused on full rehabilitation, restoration, and modernisation of the facility.
In addition to the association’s contribution, the Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly, Blessing Agbebaku, was commended for donating a 30KVA generator to the hospital. The generator is expected to enhance the hospital’s ability to provide uninterrupted essential services, particularly during power outages.
The group emphasised that safeguarding public health requires collective responsibility, calling on governments, institutions, and communities to work together to build resilient and sustainable healthcare systems.
It also urged authorities to renew and sustain investment in healthcare infrastructure, strengthen the health workforce, and improve access to essential medicines and vaccines, noting that such measures are critical to achieving inclusive health outcomes.
The Ora-Ekpen Association, USA, Inc., is a non-profit, tax-exempt organisation made up of descendants of Ora-Ekpen indigenes living in the United States and Canada, with a mandate to support development initiatives in their ancestral community.
