A diaspora-based political group, the Goodluckans 2027 Diaspora Leadership Council, has defended former President Goodluck Jonathan following comments made by social media personality VeryDarkMan.
In a statement released over the weekend, the organisation described the criticisms directed at the former Nigerian leader as disrespectful and inconsistent with his contributions to the country’s democratic development.
The statement, signed by the council’s coordinator, Eliana Melekwe, said members of the group were concerned about attempts to downplay Jonathan’s role in strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
According to the council, the movement consists of Nigerians living abroad from different professional backgrounds, including healthcare, law, academia and business, who are committed to national unity and democratic stability.
The group maintained that its activities are driven by patriotism and a desire to support Nigeria’s progress rather than social media attention or personal gain.
The council praised Jonathan’s leadership style, describing him as a calm and inclusive leader whose actions during critical political moments helped preserve peace in the country.
It also referenced Jonathan’s widely quoted statement during the 2015 presidential election, where he declared that his political ambition was not worth the blood of any Nigerian. The group said his decision to peacefully concede defeat at the time strengthened constitutional democracy and prevented political tension.
The organisation further stated that Jonathan’s conduct after leaving office has continued to earn him recognition across Africa and internationally as a promoter of peace and democratic values.
The council added that many Nigerians still associate the Jonathan administration with political tolerance, democratic freedom and relative economic stability.
It also urged public figures and online influencers to be responsible and factual when discussing national leaders, stressing that public influence should be exercised with fairness and respect for historical records.
The group reaffirmed its support for democracy, peaceful coexistence and national unity in Nigeria.
