Diaspora Coalition Urges South Africa to Reject Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s Envoy

A diaspora-based civil society organisation has called on South African President Cyril Ramaphosa to decline any move to accept former Nigerian aviation minister Femi Fani-Kayode as Nigeria’s ambassador to South Africa, citing concerns over his public record and potential diplomatic consequences.
In a letter dated March 31, 2026, the Global Coalition for Security & Democracy in Nigeria expressed reservations about the reported posting, arguing that such an appointment could negatively affect bilateral relations and South Africa’s global image.
The group claimed it had received information suggesting that Fani-Kayode, who was initially linked to a diplomatic posting in Germany, might be reassigned to South Africa following reported complications with the earlier nomination.
According to the organisation, the former minister’s past public statements and political conduct raise questions about his suitability for a sensitive diplomatic role. It warned that appointing a controversial figure could introduce unnecessary tension into Nigeria–South Africa relations.
The coalition also referenced the European Union Election Observation Mission report on Nigeria’s 2023 general elections, alleging that Fani-Kayode was associated with the spread of misleading political information during the period.
It further cited instances of disputed claims attributed to him during the elections, arguing that such actions undermine democratic values and could reflect poorly in an international diplomatic setting.
Beyond political concerns, the group pointed to past public controversies involving the former minister, including confrontations with media professionals and allegations of misconduct raised by political figures, though many of these claims remain contested.
The organisation also questioned the transparency of the nomination process, alleging that proper legislative scrutiny may not have been fully observed before his inclusion among ambassadorial nominees.
It urged the South African government to consider diplomatic norms, security implications, and broader political sensitivities before making any decision on the appointment.
Copies of the letter were reportedly sent to senior South African officials, including the country’s foreign affairs ministry and parliamentary leadership, as part of efforts to draw wider attention to the issue.
Fani-Kayode has previously dismissed similar allegations surrounding his nomination, describing them as unfounded and politically motivated.
