The Croatian Ministry of Defence has clarified that all Croatian citizens, including those with dual nationality living abroad, are required to register for the country’s reintroduced military service.

Under the amended Defence Act, basic military training will begin in 2026, with conscripts aged 18 to 30 eligible for the programme. While registration is mandatory, the Ministry stressed that actual service obligations for citizens residing abroad will depend on individual circumstances, including previous completion of military or civilian service in another country.

Officials confirmed that registration can be completed through Croatian embassies or consulates. Citizens who fail to comply may face administrative penalties. Certain groups, such as clergy, police cadets, or those medically unfit, remain exempt.

The two-month training, paid and fully supported by the government, will take place in military barracks in Knin, Slunj, and Požega. Completion of service is also recognized as professional experience and may provide advantages in securing state employment.

The government’s clarification comes amid concerns in the diaspora over the scope and enforcement of mandatory military service, with officials urging citizens abroad to remain informed through official channels.
