The First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, was on Tuesday decorated as the Grand Matron of the Road Safety Special Marshals in recognition of her contributions to road safety advocacy in Nigeria.

The honorary title was conferred on her by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) during a ceremony in Abuja led by Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed, highlighting her influence and commitment to public safety initiatives.

Senator Tinubu expressed gratitude for the honour and urged greater adoption of technology, stronger inter-agency collaboration, and better enforcement of speed limits to reduce road crashes nationwide.

She also acknowledged that while road rehabilitation and construction efforts are ongoing, many highways still require significant improvements to ensure the safety of road users.

The First Lady encouraged the FRSC to intensify public sensitisation campaigns and invest in stricter enforcement of traffic regulations, particularly during festive periods when accidents are most prevalent.

“I believe we should do more with speed limits. Are people complying? We don’t want to see accidents on our roads. Speed limits are very crucial and must be adhered to, even in other developed countries,” she said.
“We also need more officers on the road. In other countries, we see teams working together. We don’t want lives lost, especially during the Yuletide season. More personnel on the road will help caution people and save lives,” she added.

Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed said the decoration recognises the First Lady’s commitment to the welfare of Nigerians and her role in leading the campaign to reduce road crashes, emphasising that stronger partnerships and national support are essential to achieving a 50 per cent reduction in road accidents by 2030.
