A tragic road accident in Regina, Saskatchewan, has claimed the life of a 19-year-old woman identified as Marvelous Ugochukwu, a Nigerian student, after a freight truck ran a red light and crashed into a bus shelter at the intersection of Dewdney Avenue and Elphinstone Street.

According to the Regina Police Service (RPS), officers were called to the scene shortly before noon on October 12 after reports of a transport truck leaving the roadway and colliding with a car, a light post, and a bus shelter. The victim, who was sitting inside the shelter at the time, was fatally struck. Emergency responders pronounced her dead at the scene, while the driver of the car involved was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.

Although the police have yet to release the victim’s name publicly, multiple reports from the Peoples Gazette and witness accounts identified her as Marvelous Ugochukwu, a Nigerian student residing in Regina. Witnesses told reporters that the truck driver appeared to be attempting to beat a red light before losing control and veering off the road.

Authorities said the intersection was temporarily closed following the incident as investigators examined the crash scene. The driver of the truck was reportedly taken into custody for questioning.

The death of the young woman has sent shockwaves through Regina’s Nigerian student community. A candlelight procession was scheduled for Sunday evening in her honour, while a GoFundMe campaign has been launched to support her family with funeral and legal expenses.

Trucking associations, including Skilled Truckers Canada, have expressed condolences to the bereaved family and called for stricter enforcement of traffic safety laws to prevent similar tragedies.

The Regina Police Service has yet to issue an update on possible charges against the driver as investigations continue.
