The Chief of Army Staff (COAS) has announced plans to significantly expand the Nigerian Army’s aviation capabilities as part of broader efforts to combat insurgency and asymmetric threats across the country. The move, according to military authorities, is designed to enhance rapid deployment, aerial surveillance, and coordinated strike operations in volatile regions.

The COAS explained that modern warfare increasingly relies on air-ground synergy, particularly in terrains that are difficult to access by road. Expanding the Army’s aviation wings will allow for quicker response times, improved reconnaissance missions, and more efficient troop mobility in counter-terrorism campaigns.

Security experts believe that strengthening aerial capacity will provide strategic advantages in the fight against insurgent groups operating in remote forest corridors and border regions. The initiative is also expected to improve casualty evacuation logistics and humanitarian operations in conflict-affected communities.

Military officials stressed that the aviation expansion would be accompanied by rigorous pilot training, acquisition of modern platforms, and enhanced maintenance infrastructure to ensure operational sustainability. They further noted that inter-agency collaboration with the Nigerian Air Force would remain critical to mission success.

The announcement signals a continued push toward security sector modernization, as Nigeria seeks to confront evolving threats while reinforcing national defense capabilities through technological and strategic upgrades.
