World heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua was involved in a fatal road accident on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State, leaving two people dead and several others injured.

The crash occurred late in the morning around the Makun area, close to Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan-bound carriageway. The incident involved a convoy transporting the boxer, which reportedly collided with a stationary truck on the busy highway.

Joshua was travelling in a Lexus SUV alongside three other occupants when the vehicle rammed into the parked truck. A second vehicle in the convoy, believed to be carrying his security detail, followed closely behind at the time of the accident.

Eyewitnesses at the scene said the impact was severe, prompting immediate rescue efforts by passers-by before emergency responders arrived. Two passengers inside the Lexus one seated beside the driver and another sitting close to Joshua, were confirmed dead at the scene.

Joshua sustained minor injuries and was rescued from the wreckage before being taken to a hospital for medical attention. One other occupant of the vehicle also survived and is currently receiving treatment.

Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps arrived shortly after the crash to manage traffic and commence preliminary investigations. The exact cause of the accident remains under investigation, with authorities examining factors such as speed, visibility, and the placement of the stationary truck.

The Ogun State Police Command later confirmed the incident, stating that two fatalities were recorded, while Joshua and another survivor were hospitalised at an undisclosed medical facility.

News of the crash sparked widespread reactions across social media, with fans and fellow athletes expressing concern and sending messages of support to the boxer as authorities continue inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
