A major new initiative aimed at rebuilding Ukraine has been launched with strong backing from the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The “Global Alliance for Diaspora Engagement in Ukraine’s Reconstruction” seeks to mobilize the Ukrainian diaspora’s resources, expertise, and connections in support of the country’s recovery.

Unveiled at the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Rome, the Alliance is designed to transform international goodwill into concrete, long-term efforts that rebuild institutions, restore communities, and stimulate Ukraine’s economy.

The platform was introduced during a high-level session titled “Diaspora-Driven Strategies for Empowering Ukraine’s Recovery and Fostering Cohesion.” It brought together Ukrainian officials, diaspora leaders, international organizations, and donors, with a shared goal of fostering cross-border collaboration and aligning diaspora contributions with national priorities.

“This is a crucial moment to move from goodwill to governance,” said Arthur Erken, IOM Regional Director for Europe and Central Asia. “With over 20 million Ukrainians abroad and millions more displaced since 2022, this community holds a vital stake in shaping the country’s future.”

Built on months of consultations with diaspora communities especially in Italy the Alliance reflects a growing appetite for involvement beyond remittances. Many members expressed readiness to offer their professional skills, technical knowledge, and personal networks in areas like education, healthcare, infrastructure, and local governance.

The Alliance will serve as a centralized coordination hub, ensuring diaspora-led efforts are impactful and aligned with Ukraine’s evolving recovery roadmap. It encourages both institutional partnerships and grassroots action, bringing civil society, local governments, and national agencies into active cooperation.

A Task Force is currently drafting a detailed roadmap outlining the Alliance’s structure, coordination mechanisms, strategic focus areas, and tools for monitoring impact and transparency. While membership is voluntary, participants are expected to adhere to principles of mutual accountability and collaborative action.

Crucially, the initiative aims to forge stronger links between the diaspora and communities inside Ukraine.especially in areas leading local recovery efforts to ensure support from abroad addresses real needs and fosters inclusive, sustainable development.

The Alliance is open to stakeholders from government, development agencies, academia, and the private sector. With IOM providing strategic and technical backing, the platform is positioned to play a long-term role in building a resilient, democratic, and united Ukraine.
