The United Kingdom has officially opened the application portal for the 2026–27 Chevening Scholarships, inviting outstanding candidates from around the world including Nigeria to apply for the prestigious, fully funded master’s degree programme.
According to the British High Commission in Abuja, applications opened on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. UTC, and will close on October 7, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. UTC. All applications must be submitted online via the official portal: www.chevening.org/apply.
Chevening, funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organisations, offers fully funded one-year master’s degrees at UK universities to individuals with proven leadership potential and a strong commitment to effecting positive change in their communities and countries.
Speaking on the launch of the new application cycle, Emma Hennessey, Head of the Scholarships Unit at the UK FCDO, described Chevening as “highly competitive,” with a rigorous selection process aimed at identifying the brightest and most driven individuals.
“Chevening Scholars are selected not just for their academic excellence but for their leadership, networking capabilities, and vision for global and local change,” Hennessey said in a statement.
The British High Commissioner to Nigeria, Dr. Richard Montgomery, encouraged Nigerians with strong leadership potential to take advantage of the opportunity.
“Chevening is more than a scholarship it is a gateway to a global network of leaders, innovators, and changemakers. We’re looking for passionate individuals who can influence and inspire,” Montgomery stated.
Since its inception in 1983, Chevening has supported over 60,000 professionals from more than 160 countries and territories. Its alumni network includes diplomats, business leaders, civil society advocates, academics, and government officials.
Prospective applicants are advised to review eligibility requirements, prepare a compelling leadership narrative, and ensure all supporting documents are submitted before the deadline.
For Nigerian professionals and changemakers aiming to pursue a master’s degree in the UK, the Chevening Scholarship remains a life-changing opportunity to gain a world-class education and join a global network of future leaders.
