The United Kingdom has introduced a new policy allowing international students, including Nigerians, to apply for the Innovator Founder visa without leaving the country. The change, effective November 25, 2025, removes previous barriers that required students to return home before switching visa categories.

Under the updated rule, students on valid study visas can begin setting up businesses while their Innovator Founder visa applications are processed. This provides greater flexibility for graduates seeking to launch innovative ventures in the UK.

The Innovator Founder visa permits international students to establish businesses that bring unique products or services to the market. Eligibility requires a viable business plan, endorsement by an approved body, and compliance with all application requirements.

Previously, the Start-up visa served as the main pathway for international entrepreneurs, but with its discontinuation, the Innovator Founder route now offers the primary option for graduates looking to build businesses in the UK.

Students may only engage in entrepreneurial activities once they have applied for the visa while their study visa remains valid, and the application is endorsed by a recognised body.

The policy aims to encourage entrepreneurship among foreign students and support the growth of innovative businesses, particularly benefiting Nigerians, who make up a significant portion of the UK’s international student population.

The move is expected to simplify the process for student entrepreneurs, enabling them to develop businesses without disruption and contribute more directly to the UK’s economy.

This initiative reflects the UK’s broader strategy to attract and retain global talent, fostering an environment where international graduates can establish successful ventures and drive innovation.
