Turkey has formally sought inclusion in Nigeria’s electronic visa system to simplify travel for Turkish citizens and enhance bilateral business, investment, and diplomatic relations. The move is aimed at reducing logistical challenges and encouraging stronger economic engagement between the two countries.

The request was made during a courtesy meeting between Turkish Ambassador to Nigeria, Mehmet Poroy, and Nigeria’s Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at the Ministry’s headquarters in Abuja. Ambassador Poroy explained that Turkish applicants currently must travel to Ankara to process Nigerian visas due to the lack of a Nigerian visa office in Istanbul, creating unnecessary difficulties for business travelers.

Ambassador Poroy emphasized that access to the e-visa system would encourage Turkish investors, traders, and entrepreneurs to explore opportunities in Nigeria. He noted that easier visa procedures could boost participation in trade fairs, commercial exhibitions, and other investment activities across the country.

The ambassador also sought clarification on Nigeria’s visa policies, citing inconsistent guidance from certain Nigerian missions abroad. He suggested that clear and streamlined procedures would help prevent confusion and support smoother travel for Turkish citizens.

Responding, Minister Tunji-Ojo acknowledged the importance of facilitating legitimate business travel. He assured that the Ministry of Interior is committed to transparency, improving visa services, and maintaining open dialogue with foreign partners to support trade and investment.

During the meeting, the recognition of Nigerian marriage certificates abroad was also discussed. Minister Tunji-Ojo clarified that certificates issued under Nigerian law are constitutionally valid and do not require additional verification by foreign missions. Ambassador Poroy agreed to review his embassy’s procedures in light of this clarification.

Both officials committed to sustained engagement to strengthen bilateral relations. The discussions reflect ongoing efforts by Nigeria and Turkey to deepen economic cooperation, improve mobility for business travelers, and promote investment and people-to-people exchanges between the two nations.
