President Bola Tinubu on Monday received the President of Benin Republic, Romuald Wadagni, in Lagos, marking the first official meeting between the two leaders since the Beninese leader assumed office.

Wadagni arrived in Lagos for a brief working visit and was welcomed by Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu before proceeding to the President’s residence in Ikoyi for talks with Tinubu.

The meeting, which was held behind closed doors, lasted for about 30 minutes. Neither government immediately released details of the discussions following the engagement.

Nigeria was represented at Wadagni’s inauguration ceremony by Vice President Kashim Shettima, reflecting the close diplomatic ties between both neighbouring countries.

Political observers say the latest meeting underscores the importance both nations place on maintaining strong bilateral relations, particularly in areas of trade, border management and regional security.

Nigeria and Benin Republic share extensive economic and cultural ties, with millions of dollars in cross-border trade taking place annually between the two West African nations.
